Innovative domestic grinders confirmed in shipyard Brodosplit conditions

At the Brodosplit shipyard Ltd., on 13th January, 2010 was presented results of testing period, using pneumatic grinder of domestic business company Banko.

It is innovative domestic product, which was developed with financial and logistical support of Business Innovation Center of Croatia – BICRO, Ltd. and over two months, from September to November last year tested in industrial conditions, in the Brodosplit shipyard.

Just use the component in real production conditions was the most important link to quality assessment and competitiveness of the Banko tools in relation to many world-known brands of the same tools.

- We are glad that we could be a testing ground for one domestic product that the quality can be measured with the global competition - said at the conference Matko Balić, director of production in Brodosplit - and, it was one of the most important tasks, but also benefits the production of powerful system as it Brodosplit. No high domestic manufacturer of industrial conditions in fact there is no possibility or subjected to testing your product as required for quality assessment, on the other hand, such a product at some stage this may qualify for the large systems and thus achieve recognition in the market. Brodosplit time fulfills its purpose, which is often unjust in another plan, which is to be the flywheel for many small manufacturing companies in Brodosplit have a reliable partner in the development and eventual sale of products - said Balić.

Nikola Mikačić, Head of Investments, said that the pneumatic Banko grinders during the test "is not spared" – In the workshops of Brodosplit, tools because of the nature of work actually spend up to a maximum and I think that there was no better place to test the limits of endurance for the grinding of the Banko. Worked on them our most professional and most skilled workers who are now able to assess any problems and the tools we use technologically demanding stages of the work, like sanding prochrome tubes and small parts. On this basis, we estimate that the Banko grinders are quality alternative to existing tools.

With the announcement that the trial use of the grinders after in Brodosplit continue in all other Croatian shipyards, Aljoša Bošković, Director of the company Banko, announced this year and the beginning of penetration on foreign markets – at the end of February on a large international trade fair of tools in Köln, organize the first international presentation of Banko grinders. For some European markets, including the German market, but vendors have agreed, and we expect that, after the fair, thanks to references obtained in the tests, and others appear interested partners for the European market.

During the year of the monitoring by Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) and commercial banks are planning to increase production capacity in accordance with the initial announcements about the demand for our products - said Aljoša Bošković.

Dalibor Marijanović, director of Croatian Business - Innovation Center Ltd.(BICRO) said pneumatic grinders project as a positive example of cooperation between the scientific and the private sector where BICRO financed the project of company Banko with 7.6 million kuna, and a further 3.6 million invested in prototyping technically advanced version of the tool. – I am extremely happy as this is, the final stage proved that we recognize and support the development of technically superior products that may find wide application in industry. I believe that success in development and expected success in the market Banko grindes, is guideline for other innovative entrepreneurs who support the path from idea to product etabliranog can contact the Croatian Business - Innovation Center, - Marijanović said.

Pneumatic Banko grinders uses an innovative lamella machine, designed and constructed in accordance with all known safety regulations and the latest technological achievements in continuous use in the harshest working conditions. Compared with pneumatic grinders world's leading manufacturers, the Banko grinders has increased grinding efficiency and greater durability, allow production without pollution of the environment and produces less vibration due to work. In addition, there is greater energy efficiency and ergonomic design for less operator fatigue and easier control when working, all with competitive price.

From sailing boats (bracera) to tankers

In the Croatian Maritime Museum in Split, on January 12, 2010 was opened the exhibition to models of ships and archival materials that illustrate the development of shipbuilding in Split in 19th and 20 century.

The exhibition is titled "From bracera to tankers" and it is, they want to put the visitors an insight into all models of ships in the last 200 years built in Split - bracere, boats, the first metal boat built in Split, war ships, tankers, ferries and passenger ships. Bracera is the name of a traditional sailing ship on the east coast of the Adriatic which can be run and paddles.

- This is the first exhibition in Croatia which testifies to the development of shipbuilding in a shipbuilding center - said the director of the Croatian Maritime Museum Stjepan Lozo and added that he would be open by the end of this year's tourist season and will be part of the tourist offer of Split. Shipbuilding in Split is not only the industry and products. It is a powerful part of the identity of the city and its people. Until the First World War Naval Architecture in Split was not particularly significant. After the war, became the focus of Split shipbuilding and climbs toward the meaning of relevant terms in the world - said the director of Lozo at the opening.

The exhibition was opened by Nansi Ivanisević, Head of Culture Split City Administration. In her speech, stressed that "the marine and shipbuilding industry part of the identity of Split," and that it is necessary to educate younger generations about the history of shipbuilding that she would not be forgotten. Without added that it was "totally and cultural value of" history of shipbuilding.

Croatian Maritime Museum curator Gordana Tudor said that this exhibition seeks to show Split shipbuilding excellence.

Exhibits of the exhibition showing a range of Naval Architecture in Split, which covers a period of up to 200 years. Since the fall of the Venetian Republic over the period of the Monarchy, two of Yugoslavia and the independent Croatia.

In the great hall of the place was captured by many models, such as bracere "Dinka," the ship from the mid-19th century, models of the steam tug "Konjic", the first iron ship built in the bay Supaval 1936th years and that explains senior curator Gordana Tudor, considered the beginning of modern shipbuilding in Split.

- Through 200 years of Split was the 15 shipyards, small and large. Mention the shipyard, "Ivanko" and "Košćina, who built sailing ships, logers. "Ivanko" is, say, 1906. built ship, "Hum," which we believe was the first steamboat built in Split. They were here shipyards "Pakmor" and "Jeričević, who built fast motor boats and yachts. "Pakmor" also rented boats and so dealt with nautical tourism, and the late 30s of the last century, built the body of trucks for autoindustry "Ford," says curator Tudor interesting details from history, adding that the back 1802nd Split was even 12 carpenters.

Walking among the colorful models, finds and contemporary ships. There is a huge tanker model (256 meters long!) "Jawaharlal Nehru", whose godfather 1969th was Jovanka Broz.

- The first boat which shipyard Brodosplit built for foreign markets was a multi-purpose cargo ship "Cruzeiro do Sul" 1958th for Switzerland company "Ocean Shipping". The entire production from the shipyard 1962nd, 1965th and 1969th year was for the foreign clients.

Enticing views of the first model ship that was built by the Split shipyard. This is a boat, "Rosa de Foneseca" built for Brazil 1962nd year. A little further on a large wall painting on the sea crossing bulk carrier "Split" was built the same year. A little further is the huge model, car and passenger ferry ''Amorella'' built 20 years ago, which still sail the seas of the cold north of Europe.

At the exhibition there is also a lot of old photos, documents, original tools. Contribution to the exhibition gave shipyard Brodosplit borrow expensive models. The exhibition will last until the end of August 2010.

Swiss photographer Luca Zanier in the oil tanker

Tank as an artistic motif

Well-known Swiss art photographer Luca Zanier visited Brodosplit shipyard in mid-September 2009, spending most of his time in a cargo tank of Hull 462, recently delivered to the owner. The reason? Zanier has chosen a tanker as part of his photo project, with motives were found in the world of industry. Brodosplit's newbuilding was found by - pure chance.

Here's how the author, once an assistant to the great Oliviero Toscani (Benetton's provocative marketing campaigns author and world photograph star), explained his latest project: - I find various modes of transport that enable the movement of materials used to supply our world with a sufficient supply of energy and those plants that then transform these products into whatever they may be are vital to the daily functioning of our societies. The sheer vastness and complexity of the abovementioned is something that is in many cases not thought of nor appreciated by the normal citizen: Powerful spaces, endless walkways, wide sluices, cryptic signs; all combined with miles of cables and pipes. A hidden world, known only to a few and yet which has a huge influence upon our daily lives, absolutely essential in fact. My intention is to capture these modes of transport and plants, on film, in an artistic manner. The idea is more about perspectives, colours and shapes. What I am proposing is to dissipate technology into aesthetics - Zanier wrote in the introduction.

Zanier started his interesting project in the summer of 2008 and has already photographed several nuclear power plants, hydroelectric power plant, heating plant and oil refinery in Switzerland. Work in Split was his first one outside the homeland, and his future plans include photoshoot of coal-fired power station and oil platform, followed by a series of exhibitions in Europe. The crown of the project will be publishing a monography "Space And Energy".

The most fascinating thing about Zanier's work is his surgical precision. This superb photographer and his assistant spent three days taking photos of only one motif, the interior of "Stena Progress'es" cargo tank, finding a variety of unusual angles that show strange aesthetics of heavy industry. The space was light affected only through an open tank cover, without any help from artificial lighting.

Zanier started his career as an assistant to Oliviero Toscani in Italy and France. Since 1993, he works as an international freelancer in the domains of advertisement, reportage and independent artwork, with exhibitons in Switzerland, France, Spain and Italy. Zanier's focus is on landscape, still life and people.

Her hull is from steel of low thickness, with fast decay because is near sea. Very important is to repair the hull, fill up all holes and repair damages under which we will lay cover steel. For repair we will use thermo stable humidity and son proof cement. Works could be finished for six months period, said Bosančić.

Reconstruction of ship, built in city of Kiel, is being done in cooperation with Croatian Restoration Institute, under Ministry of Culture and Croatian Maritime Museum in city of Split.

Until World War II ''Vridni'' worked like tugboat in harbour Split and she was damaged in German bombing, but repaired in Island of Vis in 1969. From Brodosplit shipyard she goes to nemesis pension after what she is exhibited in shipyard’s park.

- ''Vridni'' has deeply marked Split harbour history and she is outstanding monument of seafaring. I hope that her reconstruction will end until shipyard gets a new owner, said Stjepan Lozo, Manager of Croatian Maritime Museum.

This is the largest theatrical canvas, width 12 and height of nine meters, which he painted Trebotić because Rijeka theater has the largest opening stage of all theaters in Croatia. The author hopes that in Rijeka well accept the new curtain, as it did from Split and Dubrovnik when it was painted for them.

All three curtains are made in Brodosplit shipyard, in the carpenter's workshop facility and former traceurs workshop, which except as very suitable for the performance of the shipbuilding activities, shows and inspirational environment.

BRODOSPLIT Shipyard - And tourist destination

By the end of 2007, Brodosplit Shipyard was visited by 50 Union representatives of public services of Denmark. They were fascinated with shipyard especially it's contribution to the War in Croatia. In the one hour stay they visited our Museum, slipways and gave their tribute to ten men who died in the Park of Croatian tortures.

On March 21, 2008 we were visited by 24 students of famous French university La Sorbonne. We needed to prepare very hard in order to answer on their questions regarding details of production, transport of material, steel cutting, launching...how does the production last...which is the biggest ship ever built....since when we are building ships....how many per year....train in shipyard.... This visit is the part of organized journey of the production plants in this part of Europe and shipyard in Split will surely remain in their good memory.

On May 21, 2008 for the closure of their studding, 36 Swedish students of Technical University Chalmers from Gothenburg, choose our shipyard as their study travel. Slobodan Aničić, consul of Sweden tour them in Brodosplit and introduced them to the production plants.

Nativity scene

Twenty shipyard workers is joined Josip and Mary in the wake under Jesus. This is the idea of Stanislav Bavčević, self educated sculptor, who for years develops Nativity scene out of scarp material in shipyard.

Totally 26 statues are positioned on the grass near the Museum of Brodosplit. Especially efective will be the sight in night because the scene is lighted with reflectors so any passer may see them.

Five days was necessary for Bavčević and Tonći Sule to develop nativity scene out of almost two tons of scarp iron. On question why all shipyard workers (statues) have padlocks on their mouths, Bavčević replied that they are here to work not to talk. Different also from custom nativity scenes is that little Jesus is in the sea. But Bavčević had ready answer: because shipyard workers will built him a ship so he could spread his word all around the world. (December 19, 2007)

Ceremony of awarding ISO 9001:2000

At Brodosplit Museum, on 17th December 2007 the ceremony of awarding ISO 9001:2000 certificate to Brodosplit-Shipyard Ltd. was held. Among many guests at the ceremony there were representatives of the City and the County, Croatian Shippbuilding agency, Management Board, Cluser Shippbuilding, representatives of classification societies, ship owners and representative of all trade unions.

In his exposure Mr. Josip Raić, the representative of quality department, explained that this achievement has been result of hard “team work” during last year and the half. From the first moment we fulfilled main pre condition for successful building and implementation of ISO i.e. full involvement and participation of management in all levels – from the director of the company to the department’s directors and their assistants. Respectable team of 55 intern auditors made their greatest efforts in building and implementation of this quality system and they showed great professionalism in their work so they made possible to implement the system within planed time limits.

Representatives of certificate institutions, Bureau Veritas and Croatian Register of Ships, Mr. Tomo Agustinović and Mr. Damir Roje delivered the certificates ISO 9001:2000 to Mr. Domagoj Klarić, the director of Brodosplit-Brodogradilišta d.o.o., with congratulations on a well-done job in building and implementing of this quality system. Mr. Domagoj Klarić thanked and addressed the guests:

- One of the areas of future work is more intensive cooperation with suppliers and cooperates in connection with ISO 9001:2000. Also, we are happy to notice that the number of suppliers and cooperates with ISO 9001 certificates are getting higher. Of course, we don’t put the accent on the certificate as “paper”. Although the “paper” may not be disregarded in psychological and marketing sense, the most important aspect of this system may be summarized in two words: CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT! It is indisputable that we have to persist with this, the only right concept of up keeping of quality system, keeping in mind satisfaction of the buyers and benefits of the shipyard.

In front of the Shipyard is demanding and responsible work on up keeping of quality system due to the fact that the contract has been executed for three years time and the supervisors of the certificate society shall supervise functionality of the system and perform re-certification from time to time.

School visits

Nice custom of school visits to our shipyard is increasing from year to year. Firstly, in May 2007 we had a visit from students of Secondary Technical School from Dijon, France, and in September 4, students of Secondary Technical School from German town Rhein.

The group of 45 students and two teachers was lead, like last year, professor Jurgen Komm, and introducing shipyard were Dražen Bulić and Krsto Baničević, touring them through the Museum of Brodosplit. Translator was Mr Ivo Ivanišević.

Most interesting part of their visit was the sight of famous roller for sheet constructions, which was used for sheet rolling of Hitler’s army ship “Bismarck”. It was produced in Germany in 1936 and delivered in shipyard in 1952, as a part of German war reparation.

Considering their specific technical orientation, shipyard's employees guided them to slipways and what they find very interesting was Diesel Engine Factory, which is used to produce ship's engines under the licence of MAN B&W, world leading manufacturer of two-stroke engines.

Also, we are visited every year by the students of Technical school from Kranj, Slovenia. This time they were introduced to rich history of shipyard and process of building ship by Krsto Baničević, from the Education department.

The process of shipbuilding is also very interesting to the small ones, like scholars from Primary schools Skalice and Plokite and even to the kindergarten kids.

Pot for Saint Duje festivity

Brodosplit Shipyard once more answered on the invitation from Split's administration and developed a huge pot, which was used to prepare gigantic sea food risotto for citizens and visitors of Split. Diameter of pot is 2,5 meters with base build in very short time according to the idea of locksmiths and drawing of Ivan Dunić, employee of Brodosplit Design department.
