There is probably no person in the world that the news about the medical operation on close someone does not feel sadness and helplessness. After news of the black on weekends in the traffic is often not see the sequel in which we participate - and maybe save someone's life. There is something that can't be bought, because they can't produce, but only to give. Something without which no one can live, and why everyone can get into a situation depending on the goodwill of a stranger. There is not divided into left and right, the rich and poor, men and women, but only those with A, B or other blood group.
Blood banks in Croatia has a long tradition. The first blood transfusion was performed in Peter hospital in Zagreb back in 1923rd year. The first blood transfusion with blood group determination occurred in the same hospital a year later. The donors were relatives and acquaintances of patients whose blood was needed, and also in hospitals, the blood was given to the private apartments and homes. During the World War II, the blood began to take organized, and this practice has remained until this day, when all the media we often hear calls for voluntary blood banks. Probably the most job had transfusion departments during the Homeland War, when every drop of blood was worth more than usual. Day of blood donors is marked since 1963 and this tradition is maintained to this day.

Club is active in Brodosplit since the end of Second World War as a part of Safety at work department. From 1970 Club is separated from the Read Cross and is acting as independent association of citizens. It is financed mostly out of the donations of Brodosplit employees, donations of the group Brodosplit and in smaller amount out of the blood giving fee. The goal of the Club is to ensure always necessary blood doses for the employees of Brodosplit, as well as for their families, if in need. All surpluses, if any, are being donated to hospital, i.e. citizens of Split and region. For that purpose the Club tracks and organizes daily blood giving exclusively in the transfusion department of Clinical hospital centre Split (members are not allowed to give blood on field actions). Among those main activities of the Club, Club also organizes food and beverages after the blood giving, trips for their members and appropriate awards for round number of blood donations.
The response of blood donors is very big and membership in the Club usually is 1/4 and 1/3 employees of Brodosplit. Club today numbers over 1300 members. 38th Assembly of blood donors club Brodosplit
On 27th March 2008, in museum Brodosplit, 38th Assembly of blood donors club (DDK) Brodosplit was held.
In year 2007, the club Brodosplit continued with humanitarian activities that are based on providing necessary blood for the members, donors and their families, but keeping in mind production time limits and deadlines. We should not allow that the worker leaves his working position without approval of his/her superior – said president of the club Zdenko Andrijić when addressed to numerous employees of the shipyard and friends of KDDK Brodosplit. Also, he thanked to the present for coming and contributing in the Meeting of KDDK that exists since 1970.
Beside everything else the Club fulfils its social purpose because, beside needs of its own members, surplus of blood is donated to other citizens. Also, the Club is capable of helping KBC Split (Hospital) when needed. Last year, in August, the hospital announced that they need blood and the Club donated 260 doses of blood. If we remember that we have 22 working days per month that is more than 10 donors per day. Similar situation happened between Christmas and the New Year when the club provided 245 blood doses. In total, calculating these two critical parts of year the KDD provided 505 doses of blood.
This activity is noted especially by Hospital Split that awarded the humanity of members of DDK. The head of transfusion department, dr. Jela Martinović-Mikulandra, for newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija, said that the KDDK Brodosplit participates with 15% or 1/6 of all donated blood doses.
On the meeting was stressed out that addition efforts should be put into promotion and stimulation of blood donation because, in Croatia, it is still under European standards (3,8% donors and European standard is 5%). Special care should be taken about new generations and their participation in theses activities. Traditional motto of donors is ''One donation of Blood per year!''
For that purpose awards for members for certain number of doses were introduced and most active members are recommended. Besides organising Donation, KDDK Brodosplit organised vacations for donors in forms of tours where prizes were awarded.
Last year 1964 doses of blood were donated, i.e. 179 more than in 2006.
124 new members joined the Club and now, total number of donators is around 1300.
For year 2007 for 10 donations 63 persons were awarded, for 15 donations 44, for 20 donations 31, for 25 donations 36, for 30 donations 21, for 35 donations 16, for 40 donations 16, for 50 donations 11, and for 60 donations 4 persons.
Special prizes was awarded Ante Balić for 70 donations, Andro Veić and Nediljko Vitaljić for 80 donations, and Miroslav Kuščić for 90 donations.
